妊婦さん「必読」の書！　バース・エデュケーターの資格を持つハンシ・ゴア氏が、お産への医療介入に関するあらゆる 最新のデータを集め、それを医療に詳しくない女性たちにも分かりやすい形にまとめているので、女性自身が自分のケースを考慮しつつ、情報に基づいた決定を するのに役立つ。お産の際には女性の体はたいていは正常に働き、ほとんどの場合は、お産の過程で介入が少なければ少ないほどうまく運ぶということを、著者 は固く信じている。

　また、会陰切開、陣痛誘発、陣痛促進、胎児監視装置などという介入を慣例的に行うのは、百害あって一利なしであるという信念を持っていて、それは豊富な 研究に裏づけされている。著者は、アンチ科学技術でも、アンチ医師でもない。ただ、科学技術が役に立ってくれるのは思慮分別のある使い方をした場合であっ て、誰にでも行うやり方はよくない、と確信しているのだ。

　どの章でもひとつ の医療介入事項に焦点を当て、あとは基本的に同じ形式で書いている。まず主流となる考えや実践の批評から入り、次にそれに関する手順があれば記述し、続い て「総決算」と称した率直なプラス・マイナス評価をし、最後に関連するデータについての著者の考えを述べている。122ページに及ぶ付録では、研究本文を 素人にもわかる言葉で概説しているので、様々な研究結果をより詳しく読むことができる。

　どんな女性でも、お産のケアについての十分な情報に基づく選択ができるように、あらゆる必要な手段がここに分かりやすく詳しく書かれている。もし妊娠中に１冊だけ読むとしたら、この本をどうぞ。

The Thinking Woman’s Guide to a Better Birth, Henci Goer, The Berkeley Publishing Group, 1999.

An absolute "must read" for every pregnant woman! Henci Goer, a certified childbirth educator, takes all of the most up to date research on medical interventions and distills it into a form easily understood by non-medically versed women in order that they may make informed decisions regarding their care. She is very clear in her belief that women’s bodies work well in birth most of the time and the less done to interfere with the process the better in most cases. She believes it is the routine use of interventions such as episiotomy, induction, augmentation, EFM, etc. that can actually cause more harm than good and in this belief she is generously supported by research. She is not anti-technology or anti-doctor but is clear that it is the judicious and not routine use of technology that can be useful.

Each chapter focuses on one intervention and follow the same basic pattern. They begin with a critique of mainstream beliefs and practices, followed by a description of any relevant procedures, continuing with a frank plus/minus evaluation called "The Bottom Line", and ending with her thoughts on the relevant research data. A 122 page appendices which reviews the actual literature in layman’s terms is helpful for a more detailed description of the various research findings.

All the tools needed for any woman to make fully informed choices about her care during birth are clearly set out in this book. If you read only one book during pregnancy let it be this one.
