この本は、分娩と出産に関する医療研究を実に詳しくガイドしている。妊産婦にかかわる仕事をするプロ向けの本だが、興味のある人なら男女を問わず面白く読める。 研究方法、結論の引き出し方、研究を読み取って効果的に評価する方法についての短い章があり、その後著者は、広く行われている様々なお産への医療介入に関 して、12章に渡って論じている。各章とも、まずひとつの神話（みんなが根拠もないのに思いこんでいること）から始まる。続いて研究から導き出した事実が 書かれ、その章の論調が決まってくる。次の例は、「胎児への害とEFM（胎児監視装置）の使用」の章から抜き取った。 「神話：胎児監視装置を使えば、赤ちゃんが死んだり脳が損傷したりすることが防げる」 その次に、主流となっている考えを分析し、その誤りに焦点を当てている。そして様々な研究から導き出したいくつかのキーポイントが列挙してあり、それが各 章の終わりのセクションで、さらに説明と検討が加えられた研究の要旨へと結びつく。最後の２、３章では、圧倒的に医師主導である現状とは異なった、代替シ ステムを取り上げている。 ゴア氏は、自分がこの本を書く資格があるかどうか という点で、ペニー・シムキン氏の話を引用しているので、ここに書いてみたい。シムキン氏もまた医師でも博士でも助産婦でもなく、バース・エデュケーター として著名な人である。彼女が以前、硬膜外麻酔のメリット、デメリットを女性のためにリストアップしたとき、ある麻酔医から、あなたはいったいどんな資格 があって医療問題が書けるのか教えてくれと要求された。彼女の答えは「字が読めます」だった。ゴア氏の主張も同じことだ。神話をうのみにするのをよそう。 自分の目で研究を読み、その結論が導く事実に目を向けよう。 飯村ブレット（ Brett Iimura，ICEA 国際出産準備教育協会公認バースエデュケーター） Obstetric Myths Versus Research Realities:A Guide to the Medical Literature, Henci Goer,Bergin and Garbey,1995.This is indeed a very thorough guide to the medical research regarding labor and birth. It is written for the professional who works with pregnant and birthing women but is still readable by any interested woman or man. After a short chapter on how research is conducted, what conclusions it is possible to draw from it, and how anyone can learn to read and evaluate research effectively, Ms. Goer then follows with 12 chapters which discuss the research regarding various commonly performed nterventions. Each of these chapters starts with a myth followed by a statement of reality gleaned from the research which sets up the tone of the chapter. The following example is from the chapter on fetal distress and the use of EFM: "Myth: Elective fetal monitoring allows us to rescue babies from death or brain damage. "Reality: "Twenty-five years after elctronic fetal monitoring became part of intrpartum care,...it is yet to be proved of value in predicting or preventing neurologic morbidity." Each chapter then analyzes mainstream belief highlighting its inaccuracies. Key points gleaned from the studies are then listed and linked to the research abstracts that are more fully described and discussed in the last section of each chapter. The last few chapters make the case for alternative systems not based on the current, overwhelmingly relied on medical model. As for Ms. Goer’s qulifications for writing this book she quotes a story about Penny Simkin, another weel-known childbirth educator who is also neither an M.D., Ph.D, or midwife which I paraphrase here. After Ms. Simkin had written a list for women about the pros and cons of epidurals an anesthesiologist demanded to know what her credentials were for writing on a medical subject.
