権威的知識とは、簡単に言うと決断や行動をするときに基礎となるものだ。その知識は、ある社会や文化の中で、最も重 要視される知識である。この評論集は16の異なった文化を取り上げ、権威的知識によって、力関係やお産の過程での態度や手順がどのように決まるかが述べら れている。人類学的な視点から書かれていて、ブリジット・ジョーダンの『助産の文化人類学』("Brith in Four Cultures")（1978年。1993年第４版）をより詳しく説明している。 お産とは、あらゆる文化の女性が共通の生物学的なプロセスをたどりながらも、社会文化的な現象として見ると、劇的なほどに多種多様なものでもある。科学技 術に依存した、西洋での生物医学的なお産へのアプローチは、全世界に強い影響を及ぼし続けている。この本は、こういった傾向が軽率に続けられていることを 明らかにしているが、実際に起こったのでなければ笑える例をたくさん使っているので、異文化でのお産のとらえられ方や行われ方に興味のある人ならだれもが とっつきやすいと思うだろう。また、これを読むと自分自身の文化をよく知ることもできる。というのも、お産についての考えの多くは、実のところほとんど無 意識のうちに潜在意識の中で自分の文化に影響を受けているからだ。 第１章で はまず始めに、権威的知識はいかなる文化の中でも言葉や言葉にならない行為が補っていて、両者（例えば産婦とケアをする人）の合意に基づく契約となってい ることを示している。第２章では、権威的知識を進化論の観点で眺めている。その後は、16の文化でのお産に関連づけながら、権威的知識の様々な面を深く掘 り下げている。たとえば日本の文化は、お産する場所（病院にするか助産院にするかというようなこと）は、誰が関わるか、どんな処置がとられるか、というこ とだけでなく、お産のときの身体的プロセスや女性のお産の経験にまで影響する例として登場する。 お産のシステムを再構成したり、別のお産のシステムを取り入れたり逆に広めたりしようとするときに、単に生物医学的な枠組みでとらえるのではなく、様々な 角度から眺めることが必要だと著者は言う。本の長さと題材は手強そうに見えるが、比較文化的な見地からお産を深く洞察しているので、ぐっと引き込まれ、面 白く読める一冊。 飯村ブレット（ Brett Iimura，ICEA 国際出産準備教育協会公認バースエデュケーター） Childbirth and Authoritative Knowledge: Cross Cultural Perspectives, edited by Robbie E. Sargent, University of California Press, 1997.Authoritative knowledge is simply the knowledge that decisions and actionsare based upon, the knowledge that is valued most within any particularsociety or sub-culture. This book is a collection of essays regarding how authoritative knowledge determines power relations and hence the attitude toward and procedures used during the birth process in 16 different cultures. Written from an anthropological perspective it expands on Brigitte Jordan’s "Birth in Four Cultures" (1978, 4th edition 1993). Although birth is a universal biological process among women of all cutlures it is also a dramatically diverse socio-cultural phenomenon. The western, technology-dependent, biomedical approach to birth contines to exert a strong gobal influence. The inadvertant consequences of this trend areillucidated using many laughable-if-they-weren’t-true examples making the book accessible to anyone interested in how birth is perceived and managed in different cultures. It is enlightening with regard to one’s own culture as well since much of what one believes about birth is actually, almost unconciously, subliminally influenced by one’s culture. The first chapter sets the stage by showing how authoritative knowledge is a mutual contract agreed upon by both sides of an interaction (ex: the birthing woman and her caregiver) reinforced by verbal and nonverbal behavior within any particular culture. This is followed by a chapter looking at the issue from an evolutionary perspective. The rest of the book goes into great depth of various aspects of authoritative knowledge as it relates to birth in 16 cultures. For example, Japan is used to illustrate that the place where birth occurs (ie: hospital or midwif-run birth house) influences not only who is considered in charge and what actions are taken but can actually affect the physical process and women’s experience of birth. This book speaks to the variety of perspectives needed to be taken into account rather than simply the biomedical model when trying to restructure and/or import or export one system of birth to another. although this book looks daunting in its legnth and subject it is a fascinating, enjoyably readable, insightful look at birth from a cross-cultural perspective . by Brett I この本が買えるページ amazon.com |
